California Ocean and Coastal Environmental Access Network - CalOCEAN is a web-based virtual library for the discovery of and access to ocean and coastal data and information from a wide variety of sources and in a range of types and formats

Coastal Conservancy - The Conservancy is a state agency established in 1976 that works in partnership with local governments, other public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private landowners to purchase, protect, restore, and enhance coastal resources, and to provide access to the shore.

Coastal Commission - The commission was created in 1972. Its primary mission is to to plan for and regulate land and water uses in the coastal zone consistent with the policies of the Coastal Act.

Department of Boating and Waterways - Among other mandates, this department does work in the area of beach restoration and sand renourishment.

Department of Fish and Game - Their mission is to manage California's diverse fish, wildlife, and plant resources, and the habitats upon which they depend, for their ecological values and for their use and enjoyment by the public.

Private Organizations and Resources

The California Coastal Trail Project - A joint undertaking of the California Coastal Commission, Department of Parks and Recreation, State Coastal Conservancy, and Coastwalk. The site documents the legal and other developments in this ongoing project.

California Shore and Beach Preservation Association - The California chapter of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association. The CSBPA is an educational and professional association with members from government, academics, coastal engineering and other professions, as well as property owners and individuals and groups interested in the coast of California.

California Surf Lifesaving Association - Good website on an important aspect of beach use (safety), but also including a good index of legislation, both proposed and in-effect, on lifesaving operations.

Center for Coastal Studies - The Center is a research division of the Scripps Institute for Oceanography at UC San Diego.

Gaviata Coast Convervancy - A group with goals including preservation of this stretch of Southern California's coast (in Santa Barbara County), including possible designation of the area as a National Seashore.

Great Coastal Places Campaign - A Sierra Club campaign focusing in protection of specific sites rather than react to specific development proposals.

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal, The - This is a law student-edited journal published by the students of the University of Maine School of Law, and covers "issues in marine resource regulation, coastal zone management, marine environmental protection, and other issues of importance in the field of ocean and coastal law."

Surfrider Foundation - A non-profit organization dedicated to protecting oceans, waves and beaches.

University of Maine School of Law Marine Law Institute - The Marine Law Institute is the research and public service component of the Ocean and Coastal Law Program and, according to their website, is the only law school-affiliated marine policy research program in the Northeast.

University of Oregon School of Law Ocean and Coastal Law Center. An institute dedicated to research and education in the law and regulations that concern and affect the uses of the oceans, its resources, and the coastal zone.

University of Washington Research Guide for U.S. Ocean and Coastal Law - Very little California-specific content. Last updated 11/2000. That said, still a good collection of links that provide information and resources in this area, particularly within the U.S. federal government.

Vote The Coast - A pro-Coastal Commission advocacy group. Website tracks pending legislation affecting coastal areas.
